Essential Oils and the Brain...

Essential Oils and the Brain

Frustrated with your memory lately?  Having trouble getting your kids to focus on school? Tired of the unruly energy and mood swings in your child?  Essential oils can be used to help with memory, focus, depression, anger, ADD/ADHD, and so much more. Learning about how the brain works and evaluating which areas of your brain are struggling is vital in helping solve the problem.

I know you are eager to see how the oils can be used, so I will put that information first, but make sure to read on past the oil section, as I have posted other interesting Brain facts and resources....

Here is a starter list of Young Living Essential Oils to help with the brain and some of their uses. There are about 250 drops of oil in a 15ml bottle of oil.  And most times you only use 1-4 drops at a time.  So that is up to 250 uses per bottle.

  • Question: If you have heart issues, what does your doctor do?  Most likely take scan and run tests.
  • You get the point right?
NOW, if you have depression, anxiety, ADHD/ADD, autism, memory issues, focus issues, hormonal issues, etc... What does your doctor do?  Most likely prescribe a chemical altering drug!!  My 13 year old son and I have been down that road, and I can assure you we never had a scan of the brain, a blood test, or any other service......just given a prescription to try. And then another and another.  Then one to deal with the side effects of the others.   WHY?

126 uses for Young Living Everyday Oils

126 Uses for the Young Living Everyday Oils Kit
Click here to see what comes in kit.

The Everyday Oils kit was created by Young Living Essential Oils so that anyone could immediately use
and appreciate the benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils.

The kit contains four single oils: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and Frankincense, along with five oil
blends: Valor, PanAway, Peace & Calming, Purification, and Thieves.

Each of the single oils may be used as dietary supplements. All nine of the oils may be diffused. All nine of
the oils can be applied to the Vita Flex points on the feet, added to bath water, applied topically or used with
body and foot massage.

Diffusing allows the oils to stay suspended in the air to increase negative ions and oxygen, reduce bacteria,
viruses, fungi and mold. It freshens the air naturally, eliminating the need for synthetic, harmful air
fresheners.

Common “Scents” Precautions: Guidelines for the Safe Use of Young Living Essential Oils
• Therapeutic-grade essential oils are strong and safe when used as directed. Below are some
preventative precautions to help you have an enjoyable experience using Young Living Essential Oils.
• Always test for skin sensitivity and keep a bottle of V-6 vegetable mixing oil, massage oil base or any
pure olive oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort
or skin irritation. Not water.
• Read the complete label before using essential oils. Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store
them in a cool location away from children. If a child swallows an essential oil, administer milk, honey or
another safe, oil-soluble liquid such as soy or rice milk.
• Don’t use essential oils rich in menthol (i.e. Peppermint on the throat or neck area of children under 30
months of age).
• The citrus-based oils of Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Orange and Tangerine as well as oil blends with a
heavy citrus concentration such as White Angelica and Purification should not be used on areas of the
skin that will be exposed to the sun or UV rays within 72 hours. They may cause an increased reaction to
the sun.
• Keep essential oils away from the eyes and out of your ears. Do not handle contact lenses or rub your
eyes with essential oils on your fingers. If the oils should get into your eyes, soothe with a drop of
vegetable oil, not water.
• Oils with high phenol content—Oregano, Helichrysum, Cinnamon, Thyme, Clove, Lemongrass,
Bergamot, Thieves, and ImmuPower—may damage contact lenses and irritate eyes. Wash your hands
thoroughly before handling contact lenses.
• Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using
these essential oils. Avoid Hyssop, Fennel and Idaho Tansy oils.
• Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe by the FDA) essential oils internally, always dilute
with an oil soluble liquid like rice milk or almond milk.
• Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Use Epsom salts, baking soda or bath gel as a
dispersing agent for oils in the bath.
• Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using essential oils containing
constituents with hormone-like activity, such as Clary Sage, Sage, Idaho Tansy, Juniper and Fennel.

Feingold Diet Basics

This month, January, I have put all 6 of us on the Feingold Association Diet.  The Feingold Association is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to train and support its members.  It cost $85 to join and get the information.  Yes, this information was priceless to me this month, as I learned so much about food, but I hated having to pay the $85....  Later this week, I will post approved items/foods from the stores I shop at (Kroger, Costco, Trader Jo's, Whole Foods)
_______________________________________________________________________________
The Feingold Program is a form of elimination diet.  It shows you how to run a short-term test to find out if certain foods and additives are triggering any symptoms.

This is what the diet eliminates:

  • Synthetic (artificial) Food Dyes (may be listed as "food coloring", "US Certified Color", "Color Added", or a number- like Yellow No. 5)
  • Synthetic (artificial) Flavoring (may be listed as "flavoring", "artificial flavoring", Vanillin)
  • Synthetic Sweeteners (such as aspartame-AminoSweet, NutraSweet, Equal, Acesulfame-K, Cyclamates, Saccharin-Sweet N' Low, Sucralose-Splenda)
  • Preservatives such at BHA, BHT, and TBHQ
  • Aspirin
  • Natural Salicylates (many fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, and some other food)
Once you see good results you can reintroduce the natural salicylates back one at time to test each one for a reaction...Synthetic additives are NOT reintroduced.
________________________________________________________________________________

Why did I start the Feingold Diet?  Many reasons.
  •  One being that the more and more I have read about our modern food, the more and more it sickened me.  In an effort to feed the masses and make a profit, companies have become masters at finding ways to make production cheaper, preserve the food longer, and enhance the flavor to our spoiled taste buds.  For a quick look at food you should watch the documentarty called Food Inc. or visit the web-site http://www.takepart.com/foodinc
  • Dr. Feingold workes specifically with ADHD/ADD and Autistic children.  His research linked these harmful synthetic products in modern food to these children.  I am a mom of 4 boys, ages 12, 13, 14, 15.  As a home school mom, I would love to cut down on the list of symptoms Feingold attributes to food additives....
    • hyperactivity,
    • impulsive actions,
    • compulsive actions,
    • emotional concerns,
    • short attention span,
    • neuro-muscular involvement,
    • cognitive and perceptual disturbances,
    • sleep disturbances, and
    • physical complaints.
________________________________________________________________________________
So how did my month go?
  • It was really hard learning about food additives.  Just when I thought I had a 'pure' product, I learned another name manufacturer's use to disguise synthetic products.  (examples: yeast extract, citric acid, natural flavoring, vanillin ..)  Also, I learned about glycerides, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, azodicarbonamide and GMO.  So many new terms to take in.
  • When you join Feingold, you get a lots of materials.  One is a book with all the products that are safe. This book was priceless, as I couldn't tell from the labels alone if a product was "Feingold approved." This stuff is tricky!!  I found most of the types of food we use in our home, and I switched to brands that were free from harmful additives.  Sometimes it makes no sense why one company would add synthetics when another company wouldn't.  But the list gave me the information I needed to navigate the stores.
  • I found an AMAZING app called FOODUCATE.  A "must" for anyone wanting to eat healthier.  It is free too!!!  You can scan barcodes on food or look up an item.  This has helped so much at the grocery store.  Be prepared to be sickened by some of your favorite products though.
  • I was in the kitchen cooking from scratch for hours this month!!  I made all my own breads, snack bars, granola, pizza dough, muffins, etc...  It is so hard to find an approved bread, and I wasn't up for paying $6/loaf for bread my kids wouldn't even like, so I made my own this month (sweetened with honey)  I also made lots of "treats" for the boys like zucchini muffins, pumpkin muffins, peanut butter bars, etc..
    ________________________________________________________________________
Results?
  • I truly believe we are a calmer, happier, more focused family this month!!
  • My boys have stayed healthy through this month where lots of their friends have become sick.
  • I have such a sense of accomplishment, knowing that for the last 30 days, my boys have eaten the way God designed food, not the way companies have altered it!!
___________________________________________________________________________-

So what now?

Today is January 31st.  31 days of Feingold.  When we started I told my boys we were going this for the month of January (Every January we do some extreme health diet/cleanse...Last year was a month of the Daniel Diet, year before that was The Elimination Diet...)  Tomorrow I will start to let them eat things off the Feingold Diet...but we are going to keep many of the principles in place.  But when they are offered that piece of candy from a friend they will be able to eat it.  And maybe once in awhile they will get fast food again.
I am very interested to see how their behavior changes in February when we allow them to have some of the synthetics before.  Who knows, maybe we will be back on Feingold 100% soon!!

Help for Psoriasis and Inflammation

A friend of mine suffers from psoriasis stemming from an auto-immune inflammation.  Below is some information from my Essential Oils Desk Reference.  Lots of information!!  What in the world do you do with it?  How do you even start to use oils and supplements from all this information? Look at the bottom of this post.  I will explain what I would do with all the information....
____________________________________________________________________________
PSORIASIS
A noninfectious skin disorder that is marked by skin patches or flaking skin that can occur in limited areas such as the scalp or that can cover up to 80-90% of body.
The overly rapid growth of skin cells is the primary cause of psoriasis.  In some cases, skin cells grow 4x faster than normal, resulting in the formation of silvery layers that flake off.

INFLAMMATION
caused by a variety of conditions, including bacterial infection, poor diet, chemicals, hormonal imbalance and physical injury.
Certain essential oils have been documented to be excellent for reducing inflammation such as German Chamomile, which contains azulene, a blue compound with highly anti-inflammatory properties.  Other oils with anti-inflammatory properties include peppermint, melaleuca, clove, mountain savory, palo santo, dorado azul, and wintergreen.

Best oils based on type of inflammation:
  •  tissue and capillary damage and bruising: Myrrh, vetiver, cistus and helichrysum.
  • bacterial infection: German Chamomile and melaleuca
  • viral infection: Ravintsara, hyssop, myrrh and thyme
Recommended Young Living Single oils:
Clove, nutmeg, lavender, thyme, Roman Chamomile, hyssop, peppermint, melaleuca, wintergreen, German Chamomile, myrrh, ravintsara, copaiba, palo santo

Recommended Young Living Blend oils:
Purification, PanAway, Aroma Siez, Melrose, Relieve It, Deep Relief Roll-on

6 drops melaleuca
4 drops German chamomile
2 drops peppermint
2 drops lemongrass

Anti-inflammation Recipe No. 2: (tissue/capillary/brusing and viral infection)
6 drops myrrh
6 drops eucalyptus
4 drops clove
3 drops palo santo
1 drop vetiver

Suppliments:  ImmuPro, Super C, Power Meal

So what in the world do you do with all that information?  Well, you could go in lots of different directions.  I am a "get started" kinda gal....  Starting somewhere is at least starting, right?  Here is a quick look at what I might do...

  • Look for oils that have multiple uses for my issues (oils I can use for more than one ailment)
  • Look at the prices of the oils and I start with the most cost effect oils.
  • Pick a few oils to start with for the problem based on those 2 factors.
For me, as I look over the recommendations for Psoriasis and inflammation,
  •  I see that both conditions recommend German Chamomile ($34.75 for 5ml), Roman Chamomile ($33.75 for 5ml), Lavender ($21.75 for 15ml), Melaleuca ($26 for 15ml) and Melrose ($17.25 for 15 ml).  **prices are my wholesale price as a distributor and don't include tax and shipping**
  • I see the Psoriasis Recipe also calls for patchouli ($33.75 for 15ml)
  • I would then look up those oils individually and see what else I could use each oil for.( For example, I would use both chamomiles for relaxant, anti-parasitic  nerve regeneration, anesthetic, detoxing liver and blood, anxiety, ADHD, depression, insomnia, skin acne and eczema.   Melrose is interesting too. It is a blend of Melaleuca, Niaouli, Rosemary, Clove.  It has strong antiseptic properties to cleanse and disinfect cuts, scrapes, burns, rashes and bruised tissue.  It can regenerate damaged tissue and reduce inflammation   It is powerful when diffused to dispels odors, purify air and protect against daily radiation bombardment.)
  • Then I would make a purchase based on those criteria.  Since Melrose is a good price and contains Melaleuca in it, I would probably buy Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Melrose.  I would leave out Patchouli because when I looked it up, there wasn't other things I would use it for.  That would cost around $73 before tax and shipping, but I would have 3 diverse oils that would have many uses in my home.
  • Remember these oils are so potent that 1-4 drops is all it takes most times.  There are about 250 drops in a 15ml bottle of oil.  I would mix the essential oils with a carrier oil like grapeseed oil.  Then I would apply it to the parts that are dry, like a lotion.
Just because I have shown what I would do, does not make it the only way!  This is just my thoughts on picking oils for these issues.

Homemade Cleaners and Hygiene Products

Homemade household cleaners and hygiene products.

So many people have asked me for the recipes for my homemade cleaners and Soaps.  I started this journey of making my own products for a number of reasons.

1. Health benefits:  I have 4 boys who do most of the cleaning in our home.  I have read over and over about the harmful chemicals in store bought cleaners, and finally got serious about changing our ways.  When one of the boys starts a coughing fit after cleaning his shower because of the potent chemicals and can't finish the job, it was time to reevaluate.  I can remember spraying the shower/tub then running out of the room to breath.  Yuck!
2. Cost:  I don't have an exact price to give you hear, but I keep all the ingredients I need stocked on my shelves, and use as needed.  Mostly items like vodka, vinegar, distilled water, Castile liquid soap, Vegetable Glycerin, ivory bar soap, washing soda, Borax, coconut milk, almond oil and my young living oils.
3. Convenience: Making my own cleaners and soaps makes things easier.   When I run out of something, I just grab the ingredients off my self and make a new batch.  Some see this as "one more thing to do", but for me it is a thoughtless act that takes just 5 minutes compared to going to store, starring at all the cleaners, trying to figure out what to buy, seeing if I have coupons or what is on sale, starring at shelf longer, then making a decision that is full of harmful chemicals.
4. Smell: I love the smell of my cleaners and liquid soap!  They have Young Living essential oils in them.  After I clean, my house smells pure and fresh.

  • On average there are 17 drops of oil per ml.  So a 15ml bottle of Young Living Essential Oil will have about 255 drops in it.  Thickness or thinness of the oil will cause variation.
  • I have gotten most of my recipes from the internet or a book I picked up called, "Vintage Remedies." Below I have listed them.

Air Freshener
I made my own labels,
 but a permanent marker will
work just as well.
Did you know most store bought "air fresheners" cause toxin accumulation in your home?  Some health experts have even said they compare the damage to cigarette smoke!  Natural fresheners are safe and therapeutic!

  • 1/2 Cup Vodka
  • 1/2 Distilled Water
  • 15 drops essential oil (see below)

Calming: 8 drops lavender / 4 drops "Peace and Calming" / 3 drops lemon

Deodorizing: 8 drops lavender / 4 drops clove / 3 drops lemon

Minty: 8 drops peppermint / 6 drops spearmint / 1 drop orange

Anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral: 15 drops of thieves oil

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake before each use.

*NOTE:  I use all Young Living products.  These are oils I have on hand.  You can mix and match and use what you have on hand.  This just gives you some guidelines.  If you were going to invest in some oils for cleaners, air fresheners etc.  See my recommendation to have on hand below.

Antibacterial Spray Cleaner
My wholesale cost for Thieves Household Cleaner is $21.50 for 14.4 fl. oz or $84.75 for 64 fl. oz before shipping and tax.
Remember it only takes a cap full
.Ask me about getting wholesale pricing on Young Living.

Easiest  way for me to make my kitchen/bathroom/general house cleaner is to use Young Living's Thieves Household Cleaner.  1 Capful of the Thieves cleaner into 3 3/4 cups water for general use. (You can increase ratio for heavy degreasing to 1 capful Thieves cleaner to 1 Cup water)

However, I don't always have Thieves Household Cleaner on hand, so I have made my own too.

  • 1 Cup Vodka
  • 1 Cup Vinegar
  • 1 Cup Distilled Water
  • 50 drops Young Living Essential Oils

*I use what oils I have on hand that work well for cleaners, known to be anti-bacterial and anti-viral.  Some include orange, lemon, lime, lavender, eucalyptus, theives oil, clove, rosemary, sage, peppermint, cinnamon    See what oils you have and combine them for a total of 50 drops. IF YOU WANT A QUICK ANSWER, BUY THIEVES CLEANER, OR THIEVES OIL TO USE IN RECIPE ABOVE.

There are approximately 250 drops of essential oil in a 15 ml bottle of Young Livings Thieves Essential Oil. Since it is so highly concentrated and most recipes call for diluting it, you will get many uses from just one bottle.

My wholesale cost for Thieves oil before tax and shipping is $31.75.
Ask my how to get wholesale prices yourself.

Laundry Detergent:

Liquid formula:  I started off making liquid detergent, but didn't like how it always separated, so I switched to powder.
  • 7 TBSP vegetable soap (glycerin)
  • 3.5 Cups baking soda
  • 1/2 Cup borax for hard water or 1/2 Cup washing soda for normal water
  • 2 Cups distilled water
  • 35 drops Young Living essential Oil (I use 10 drops lavender, 10 drops lemon, 15 drops thieves or purification)
Use 2-4 TBSP per load. (I mix in half gallon milk jug and shake before use)
.

Powder Formula:
  • 1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) of shaved bar soap Ivory
  • 1 cup of Boraz
  • 1 cup of Washing Soda
  • 35 drops Young Living essential Oil (I use 10 drops lavender, 10 drops lemon, 15 drops thieves or purification)
Thoroughly stir together for 5 minutes and enjoy the results!  I use 1 TBSP per load, 2 TBSP for heavily soiled loads.

Laundry Fabric Softener
I questioned this recipe at first.  Who wants their clothes to smell like vinegar right?  But they don't.

  • 1 Cup Vinegar
  • 15 drops lavender oil
  • 25 drops lemon oil
(you could also use purification oil or thieves oil in this recipe for added disinfected)

Use 2T in fabric softener compartment or time release ball.

I triple recipe when I make it to cut down on how often I have to make it.  Shake before use.

Liquid Body and Hand Soap
I use one basic recipe for all the soap in our home.  It is in our bathrooms next to sinks and bathtubs for body wash.  I have just saved my old store bought pump soaps, cleaned the containers and started over.
  • 1 cup liquid organic castile soap (  I use Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap - unscented)
  • 1/4 Cup Vegetable Glycerin
  • 1/3 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
  • 30 drops Young Living Essential Oil
Oils to consider using: orange, lemon, lavender, chamomile, thieves. I have never made the same batch twice.  I like to experiment and be creative with the oils I have on hand.  I will say BE CAUTIOUS OF ADDING HOT OILS TO BODY SOAP! I added peppermint oil once, which would have been okay for just hand soap, but not so good for body soap and our sensitive parts. Oops.

Homemade Coconut Milk Shampoo
  • 1/4 Cup Coconut Milk (make your own or store bought can in international isle)
  • 1/3 Cup Liquid Castile Soap (like Dr. Bronner's)
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E, Olive Oil or Almond Oil
  • 10 to 20 drops Young Living Essential Oils
I have used lavender oil for dry scalp and dandruff.

Combine all ingredients in shampoo bottle and shake well to mix.
Use 1-2 Tsp each wash.
